Review: Belen Artisan Bakers Ciabatta Roastbeef Sandwich

The Belen Artisan Bakery is owned by José. It is located in Escondido a bit of the beaten path. They specialize in European artisan breads, and so naturally we went there only to find they made sandwiches. We had a roast beef sandwich on ciabatta bread, with avocado, tomato and olives. The bread was perfect; just a bit crunchy on the outside, thick, and fresh and spongy on the inside, and you could clearly taste the freshness that so many sandwiches lack. Service was speedy, and sitting outside on their little patio a delight, despite the odd location and nearby road.

Review: Belen Artisan Bakers Ciabatta Roast beef Sandwich - Lovely cut-through of the sandwich

The ciabatta sandwich was huge. Seriously huge. I shared half with Wendie, and had to get the other half wrapped up to go after we finished. We went on one of the santa ana days in San Diego, when hot dessert winds suddenly cause a few days heat wave to hit, and we were eating this in 99 degrees weather, which perhaps also influenced our appetite. In any case the bread was fantastic. The ingredients, well they were OK, but didn’t cause a stir on my palate.  Fresh for sure, but not exceptional. The selection was also pretty regular, but for $6.50 that was to be expected. The bread is definitely what makes this sandwich so worthwhile.

The entire bread selection is unfortunately not available for sandwiches, but you can of course buy the loafs and make your own sandwiches. As you can see from the photo above, we arrive fairly late in the afternoon, and most of the breads were already sold.
